The date matters as much as the count. A cleaning in early October catches the first leaves and misses the rest. A cleaning in late November may mean working around ice. Below: a month-by-month Omaha calendar, what a visit covers, the signs you are overdue, and what moves the price.
How often should gutters be cleaned in Nebraska?
Twice a year is the baseline for most Omaha houses. Here is why the calendar splits that way.
Leaf drop in older neighborhoods such as Dundee, Benson, Field Club, Millard and midtown runs from about mid-October to early November. Spring brings a second load: cottonwood fluff from late May into June, plus wind-blown debris, pollen and hail granules from storm season, which runs April through June.
Use this as a rule of thumb:
- Once a year can work for a newer home with few or no trees nearby. Pick fall.
- Twice a year fits most homes with a tree or two within reach of the roofline.
- Three times a year fits lots shaded by mature cottonwoods, maples or oaks, where a mid-summer or extra fall pass keeps the runs from packing solid.
So, do you need gutter cleaning twice a year? If any tree overhangs or sits near the roof, yes. If your gutters are still nearly empty in the fall, once may be enough. Let the debris, not the calendar alone, decide.
Gutter cleaning schedule: a month-by-month Omaha calendar
Dates below are approximate. The National Weather Service Omaha/Valley office tracks the actual freeze dates each year, and they shift.
| Month | What is happening in Omaha | Gutter task |
|---|---|---|
| January and February | Freeze-thaw cycles. Ice dams form on roofs with weak attic insulation or ventilation. | Watch the eaves. Do not chip ice. Call for steam if ice builds. |
| March | Thaw and wind. Winter debris shows up on lawns. | Walk the yard. Look for sagging runs and downspouts that do not drain. |
| April | Last spring freeze, usually mid to late April. Storm season starts. | Wait out the freeze risk, then clear winter and storm debris. |
| May | Pollen. Cottonwood fluff begins late in the month. | Clean now if you have no cottonwoods nearby. |
| June | Fluff finishes. Storms continue. | Best spring date for homes near cottonwoods. |
| July and August | Heat and thunderstorms. | Check after any big storm. Clean only if a downspout overflows. |
| September | The fall calendar fills. Leaves are still on the trees. | Book your fall date. Trim branches that touch the roof. |
| October | First fall freeze is usually around the third week. Leaf drop starts mid-month. | Clean once the bulk of the leaves are down. |
| November | A hard freeze usually arrives in early November. | Last good window. Heavy-tree homes may need a final pass. |
| December | Snow, ice, short days. | Cleaning is rarely practical. |
If you want the whole year mapped out, our Omaha seasonal home maintenance checklist puts gutters next to the other jobs that keep a house dry and clear.
Best time to clean gutters before winter
For most homes the best time to clean gutters before winter is the last week of October through the first week of November. By then the maples have dropped, the oaks are mostly done, and the ground has not yet locked up.
Why not earlier
Clean in early October and you will likely need a second visit. A gutter that is empty on October 5 can be half full by Halloween.
Why not later
Wet leaves freeze into a solid block once the hard freeze arrives. That block holds water, adds weight and makes the job slower. If snow comes early, the work gets harder still.
Gutter cleaning before the first freeze in Omaha
The average first freeze lands around the third week of October. You do not need to beat it to the day. What you want is clear runs and open downspouts before the hard freeze, so that meltwater has somewhere to go all winter. Clear gutters also give ice dams less to build on. We cover that in our ice dam removal cost guide, and the University of Minnesota Extension explains the mechanics.
Fall gutter cleaning books early. Spring and fall are our busy seasons, and the fall calendar fills first. Call in September and you get the date you want.
Signs gutters need cleaning: what a clog looks like

Most of the evidence shows up from the ground, especially in the first heavy rain.
- Water spilling over the edge instead of running out the downspout.
- Sagging or pulling gutters. Packed debris is heavy.
- Seedlings or grass growing along the run. If it is sprouting, it has been sitting a season.
- Dark streaks on siding below the gutter line.
- Pooling water at the foundation near a downspout outlet.
- Peeling paint or rot on the fascia board.
- Icicles thick along the eave in winter.
Here is a quick test. Run a hose into the gutter at the far end from the downspout for a minute. If water backs up or trickles, something is blocking it. If it rushes out, you are clear for now.
Leave the ladder to a professional. A wet gutter edge is slick.
Gutter cleaning Omaha homes need: what a visit includes
A complete gutter cleaning should include:
- Removing debris by hand along the full length of every run.
- Clearing every downspout opening and checking that water flows freely.
- Flushing the run with water to confirm it drains.
- Bagging and hauling the debris away.
- A look at hangers, seams and end caps, with anything loose reported to you.
Protecting the house matters just as much as clearing the gutter. Our technicians are employees, never subcontractors, and they use moving blankets under ladders and wool bonnets on the ladder tops so siding and gutters are not marked. You do not need to be home as long as we have access.
Linda U. of Millard put it simply: "I was impressed with the same day service and excellent work done cleaning my gutters."

Gutter cleaning cost in Omaha: what drives the price
We quote gutter cleaning by the home, not by a flat number, because homes differ so much. These are the factors that move the quote:
- Length of gutter. More linear feet means more time.
- Height and access. A one-story ranch is quicker than a three-story with a steep roof.
- Debris load. A gutter cleaned every fall is a fast job. A gutter last cleaned three years ago is not.
- Number of downspouts, and whether any are clogged or tied into underground drains.
- Guards already installed. Some styles need to be lifted and reset.
- Tree cover. Heavy leaf, seed and needle fall packs the runs faster.
Any quote that skips these questions is a guess. Describe the house or send photos and we can tell you what to expect.
Gutter guards or regular cleaning?
Gutter guards keep the bulk of the leaves out, which means fewer cleanings. They rarely mean zero. Small debris, seeds and roof grit can still collect.
We install LeavesOut® guards, and the bids are free and on-site. If your lot has heavy tree cover and you dread the ladder every October, gutter guards in Omaha are worth a bid. Our longer take is in are LeavesOut gutter guards worth it in Omaha. LeavesOut publishes product details on its own site, and Nebraska Extension has tree-care guidance if branches touch your roof.
Guards do nothing for an ice dam, which comes from a warm attic. If you have thick ice along the eave, our ice dam removal service uses steam rather than chipping. Windows have been our specialty since 1986. See our window cleaning page.
FAQ
How often should gutters be cleaned in Nebraska?
Twice a year suits most Nebraska homes: late spring after cottonwood fluff and storm debris, and fall after leaf drop. A home with few nearby trees may need only the fall visit. A lot under mature maples, oaks or cottonwoods can need a third pass.
Do I need gutter cleaning twice a year?
If any tree overhangs or sits near your roofline, yes. Spring debris and cottonwood fluff clog runs that a fall cleaning left clear, and fall leaves refill them. If your gutters stay mostly empty through spring and you have no trees close by, one fall cleaning can be enough. Look inside once in May and you will know.
What is the best time to clean gutters before winter?
Aim for the last week of October through the first week of November. Most leaves are down by then, and the hard freeze has not yet turned wet debris into ice. Cleaning earlier often means a second visit. Waiting until December risks frozen debris and snow on the roof. Book in September, because the fall calendar fills early.
Is gutter cleaning before the first freeze in Omaha really necessary?
It is the single most useful timing decision. Omaha's first fall freeze is usually around the third week of October, with a hard freeze in early November. Clear runs and open downspouts before then let meltwater drain all winter. Packed gutters hold water that freezes, adds weight and can pull runs away from the fascia.
How much does gutter cleaning cost in Omaha?
The price depends on the linear feet of gutter, the height of the house, the number of downspouts, how much debris has built up, and whether guards are installed. We quote by the home rather than a flat rate. Call (402) 503-3015 with a rough description or photos, and we will tell you what to expect before anyone comes out.
