How Do We Clean Air Ducts?

We start by examining your ductwork and furnace configuration to determine the best place to connect our vacuum system to your main ductwork and furnace. We close or cover all vent registers to minimize dust or debris from entering your home during the cleaning process. A powerful 3-stage HEPA filtration vacuum is then connected to your furnace or main trunk line of the ductwork.

There are two sides to the ductwork system, the supply side where the cold or hot air comes out into the home and the return side, which recirculates the air back to the furnace. We start with the supply side and clean all the vent covers, ductwork and main trunk lines and then reconnect our vacuum and do the return side of the system.

We go into each vent register opening and adjoining ductwork 2 times. The first pass we use brushes or special air-driven scrubbing tools to loosen the caked on debris and dust from the walls of the ductwork. On the second pass we use what is called an ‘air sweep’. This tool sweeps all the dust and debris through the ductwork until it is sucked up and out of your ductwork by the vacuum system.

We do not simply clean the first 2 or 3 feet of the ducts, but our special tools allow us to travel up to 70 feet all the way back to the vacuum located by the furnace. We clean the main truck lines as well as the smaller ducts leading to the registers. We then clean accessible a/c coils, blower fan and housing. The average house takes 3-7 hours to complete. As part of our mission statement to complete all services with honor and integrity, we keep our pricing simple and straightforward.  We don’t use bait and switch techniques as some other companies do in the area. The cost to have your air ducts cleaned is derived from the number of furnaces and the total number of supply and return registers in your home.  If vent registers are painted or lacquered on there would be an additional charge to remove them.

Why should air ducts be cleaned?
Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems have been shown to act as a collection source for a variety of contaminants that have the potential to affect health, such as fine particles of dust, pollen, mold spores, fibers, hair and pet dander. The removal of such contaminants from the HVAC system and home should be considered as a key component in an overall plan to improve indoor air quality.

Cleaning of the HVAC system can also increase the efficiency of the system due to increased air flow through the furnace and ducts; this will result in lower heating and cooling costs. A clean system will generally have less break downs and an extended life because clean components function better and more efficiently.

When should they be cleaned?
When anyone in the home or building has breathing problems like allergies, asthma or emphysema; before moving into a new home or pre-owned home; after a remodeling project or when installing a new furnace or making changes in the air duct system.

How often should this be done?
The air duct system should be cleaned every 2-8 years. The frequency of cleaning is going to vary depending on a number of variables some of which are: the number of occupants in the home, the presence of and number of pets in the home, smoking in the home, the use of fireplaces or wood burning stoves and whether or not any remodeling work has been done on the home. Allergy sufferers will generally need duct cleaning more frequently.

How are they cleaned?
We use a method called source removal. This method is recommended by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association. A powerful vacuum is attached to the furnace or the main truck lines of the ductwork. A number of tools are then utilized to scrub the ducts. We use a power rotating brush that scrubs the ducts clean wherever possible, as this gives the finest cleaning. While the rotating brush is fed down the ductwork, compressed air blows the dust and debris toward the vacuum.

The ducts are under a constant vacuum so that dust isn’t introduced into the home. The vacuum then evacuates hepa-filtrated quality air back into the home. In areas of the ductwork that are not accessible to the power-brush system, we utilize air whips and air sweeps which scrub and then sweep all dust and debris to the vacuum.

We also clean all vent registers, furnace compartment, accessible blower fans and evaporator coils.

Is a Truck-mounted Vacuum Better than a Portable one?
While contractors with truck-mounted vacuums will usually boast about the power of their units, there are numerous disadvantages to using them. Truck-mounted or exterior vacuum systems create what could be called an ‘Open System’.

In an open system, warm air in the winter time and cool air in the summer is drawn out of the house due to the negative air pressure placed on the home as the air in your home is being drawn out of the house to the exterior vacuum, this air must be displaced by the dust and pollen laden air from outside. This unfiltered air is then drawn back into the ductwork.

Not only can this method drastically change the temperature in the home, it is also counter-productive when you are trying to increase indoor air quality.

Truck-mounted or exterior vacuum systems use 8 to 12 inch vacuum hoses that run through a doorway or window and through the house to connect up to the furnace. Not only are they an obstruction in your home, these dirty hoses can scratch up furniture and woodwork. They also create the gap to the outdoors that allows the bugs, dust and pollen laden air to be drawn unfiltered into the home and back through the ductwork.

Our system is a ‘Closed System’ utilizing a powerful, portable Hepa-Filtrated vacuum which is connected directly up to the furnace or main trunk line and continually filters the air in your home while the system is being cleaned.

Tips To Homeowners For Better Indoor Air Quality

Having your air ducts cleaned is the most effective way to improve your indoor air quality but there are other steps that you can do at home to help maintain high quality air in your home.

Changing your furnace filters– The filter in your furnace has a dust holding capacity of only so much. Once the capacity is met, air does not flow through the filter as easily and will find a path of least resistance and blow around the filter, making the dust and debris particles go along with it.

By regularly changing out your filter, the filtration is more efficient and causes less strain on your system as well. If you have a permanent washable filter, make sure to rinse out that filter with a powerful water stream regularly. Take caution and double check that the filter is dry before putting back in furnace!

Keeping your fan constantly running– For those who are allergy sufferers it is a good idea to keep the fan constantly running. This will ensure that the air in your house is consistently running through the filtration system in your house. making the air cleaner. Another benefit to keeping the fan on is that the temperature will be more consistent and evenly distributed throughout the home. No more hot or cold spots!
